Welcome to In The Groove, the Just Dance Northumberland Blog! A place to celebrate all things dance at the dance studio, and in Cobourg and beyond.
This year, we will celebrate our 5th season at our Cobourg location! After relocating to Northumberland in late 2017, Artistic Director, Tracy Lowe launched Just Dance to fill the space she felt was missing in the Port Hope / Cobourg area. An intimate dance studio, focused on family and community. Where each child's individual journey through dance is supported by professional, caring, and creative dance educators. A space where dancers of all ages and abilities feel comfortable taking the risks that are necessary for them to become the best dancer they can be.
Why Enroll in a Dance Class?
There are so many benefits to enrolling your child in a dance class--and most of these would be beneficial to everyone regardless of age! Opportunities for physical and cognitive development, learning social skills, and emotional expression can all be found in the dance studio.
Dancing helps develop coordination and balance. It builds strength and flexibility. It encourages movement and helps instill healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Dancing helps children express themselves, and encourages their imagination and creativity. It builds confidence, a work ethic, and responsibility. It can help children gain self discipline as they learn to follow instructions and manage their behavior in dance class.
When a dancer begins to learn a new skill in Acro or Hip Hop or begins pre-pointe in ballet they are also learning that skill development requires a foundation and that it takes time and effort to build one. Patience, perseverance, goal setting, time management, accountability, and resiliency are also part of this curriculum.
Dance can be used as therapy for people living with chronic diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s Disease-- strengthening muscles and the core, helping with gait, posture and balance. It can provide social stimulation for the elderly, helping to ease social isolation and other mental health challenges. Friendship, and community, are just some of the social benefits of dance.
Dance is so much more than learning steps and choreography (did I mention that Dance helps with memory!) It is a remarkable art form that benefits everyone. When you get down to it, dancing to music-- to a song that you love, is just plain fun for all of us!
Giving Back Through Dance
Soul Dancers is a local charitable organization that recognizes the relationship between dance and well-being. It is a “dance movement to nourish the body, inspire the mind and empower the souls of impoverished women and children.”
Our very own Limelight Dancewear is the ‘who’ behind Soul Dancers Charity. Social responsibility is a key tenet of Limelight’s corporate vision and giving back is an important part of their mission.
With a deep appreciation for both the physical and psychological benefits of dancing, Soul Dancers works with local organizations throughout Columbia providing after-school dance lessons, English and art lessons, healthy meals and transportation for disadvantaged youth.
Over the years, Just Dance Northumberland has hosted various fundraising efforts around the dance studio for Soul Dancers. This year’s dance season will be the same!
Our upcoming Hallowe’en themed Movie Night on October 27th is a fundraising event. 100 % of your $10+ donation will support Soul Dancers. We hope to see you there! For more information on Soul Dancers Charity visit www.souldancers.org.
